Environmental Friendly

Best Practices implemented in Sueño Azul.
Waterfalls Resort & Adventure Land

1. More than 80% of the staff is a resident of Horquetas; they receive lessons in many different areas.

2. We have 300 hectares of Protected Area (primary, secondary forest and reforestación)

3. The cleaing products we use are Biodegradable.

4. Seeking the best operation possible of our septic tanks we use efficient microorganisms (EM) guaranteeing the highest quality of the waters in.

5. Searching for a more efficient use of the energy resource, We use gas for the kitchen, the water heaters and the dryers. We also have a solar clothes dryer.

6. Aware of the importance of education in the development of our towns, we adopted to the Buenos Aires school (Pre-school and elementary). Aside from donating the construction of a class, we helped build the gym where they hold the assemblies and the Physical Education classes. We also include the children from this school in hotel activities such as cultural exchanges whether organized by the Horizontes Travel Agency or sporadically when a foreign family stays in the hotel for several days.

7. We sponsor the dance group "La Ceiba of the Rìo Frìo School. They organize native dances and make presentations for the hotel guests, who willingly help them. The tips they have received has allowed them to buy new equipment as well as new uniforms.

8. At this moment, we are coordinating a project with single mothers and other women of low resources. We will teach them how to make jewelry so they can sell it and have a new income for their families.
The locally produced items would be sold in the hotel’s store and the sale would go completely to the artisans.

9. The ceilings that we used to make where made out of palm trees, and now we are substituting it for artificial palm trying to conserve the natural Corozo kind.

10. We collaborate with the maintenance of the San Rafael River Bridge (the first hanging bridge that you crossed to get to Sueño Azul). The local government is responsible for its maintenance, but given the limited budget they manage, we help them with this. This bridge is crucial for the communication of the local people.

11. We collaborate with every one of the activities in Horquetas, such as town festivities and horse parades to raise founds for the community.

12. Some of the activities we offer our guests try to remind them of the importance of protecting and maintaining our culture and roots. For example, our botanical gardens, our Museo de Pioneros, and the rural lifestyle are all reminiscent of Tico tradition.

13. We recycle by placing properly identified garbage cans in the town of Horquetas (in front of the Buenos Aires school) and in the several areas of the hotel such as  aisles, pool, restaurant. The gathered materials are given to the local people for them to sell and have another source of income.  In the Botanical Garden (The vegetable garden) we have the Red Californian Worm that is very important for the creation of "composta" in order to use it as natural fertilizers.
